Book Review: The Leftover by Brooke Williams

I am so happy that I read this book when I did! I was starting a brief vacation for the July 4th holiday, and I wanted to make sure I started it off right with a good book. Turns out - this was the perfect book to choose! It was a quick read, with a ton of humor and unique, engaging characters. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book from beginning to end.

Megan Malone is going to kill her sister. After receiving the happy news that her sister, Molly, is pregnant, Megan is informed that she will be replacing her on the reality tv show, The Leftover, a local version of the internationally famous Survivor. Geeky, awkward, homebody Megan is the polar opposite of Molly, but she can't let her big sister down. She agrees, with the condition that she gets to name the baby if she wins the competition. Risking life and limb on a beach in the midst of a storm? Sure, she can deal. Coming face-to-face with her crush, Cane Trevino, former tv heartthrob and The Leftover paramedic? Panic ensues. But Megan knows that if she's going to win the game, she has to learn to think like the players. Soon Megan shows that sometimes it's the underdog who ends up on top in the end.

Megan was absolutely hysterical! She was crazy awkward, unabashedly honest, and genuine to a fault. She wasn't about to change herself to make the show better. Instead, she found her inner strength and let it shine. I loved seeing her character grow as she discovered herself during each challenge on the show. I related to her quirkiness, and I think we've all had those encounters with guys where you just want to die on the spot. Megan had plenty of those. Cane was a sweetheart, if a bit lacking in self confidence. I tend to like my heroes more self-assured, but his kindness towards Megan and his willingness to help others was endearing. He was the perfect match for Megan.

This was my first book by Brooke Williams, but it most certainly will not be my last! Highly enjoyable, great for a summer beach read, and I can't wait to read her next book.
