A great quick read with a lot of adventure packed into a small package! I enjoyed the spirit of the heroine, with her exuberance for her role as princess and her kindness towards others, regardless of their station. She was a character whom I would love to know, as well as several of the secondary characters.
Princess Constance of Diachona has just come of age, the time when a male heir would typically be named Junior Heir and would assume his rightful duties as the next King. However, she is the only child of her parents, and as such, she is to take the title of Junior and begin taking on an administrative role in the kingdom. With responsibility and duties comes the inevitable question of who will be the King beside her when she takes the throne, and already there are many suitors, though the man who holds her heart is already at hand. With the threat of war looming and uneasiness in the air, Constance must look to the future with both her heart and her mind.
Constance and Alexander, her childhood friend and the Commander of the Diachona army, were such wonderful characters, though I think the true "love" story here might be between Constance and her father. The love between father and daughter was so poignant, especially with her mother being ill. I enjoyed seeing the dynamic between the two of them, whether it was in small gatherings or in the council rooms where she had to attempt to make her voice heard in a room full of men. Alexander was a joy, though a smaller part of the story. He was quite clearly an absolute sweetheart - it was not difficult to see how Constance could fall in love with him. I was falling in love quite quickly, right alongside her.
This is the first book in the series, and I am eager to read the next installment! It will follow new characters in the same world, and I am confident it will be a treat to read.
