Excerpt

None of them would ever return to their old lives. She held the injustice of it in her chest and lifted her hands.

Then the sound of metal grinding and creaking filled the air. The first propeller spun off with a squeal, twisting through the air like a feather on the breeze. It crashed nearby, skidding. The others followed, scattering around the field.

The first panel split from the side of the helicopter, crumbling into a ball and falling to the ground. The remainder of the aircraft pulled apart, leaving nothing but a few seats and the floor intact. It all came down, rubble all over the dirty ground.

She grabbed each of the men that had been on the helicopter out of the air, freezing all six of them. Bit by bit, she pulled their gear from their body. Everything. Clothes, weapons, right down to their underwear. All of it flew through the air and landed in the retention pond to the right of them.

Then, she dropped the men on the ground, hard enough that some of them looked unconscious and others rolled to their knees, coughing.

When she was done, she realized with a bit of detachment, that she couldn’t hear anything, only a faint ringing in her head. She only noticed that because Seth appeared to be yelling something, and yet, she had no idea what he was saying.

Dizziness washed over her, making her lose her balance. Or perhaps the ground was actually moving toward her, and she wasn’t falling. But she doubted it.

Review

What an intriguing story! Marnee Blake definitely has skills in drawing in a reader and not letting go until they're entirely engrossed in the story. I loved the sci-fi component of the story, as well as the characters and action scenes. I felt immersed in each scene and was able to visualize myself in the moment.

Blue lives in a small (no,really, its population is less than 30) town called Glory, taking care of her grandmother and struggling to make ends meet. However, when she suddenly becomes violently ill and wakes up to find that seemingly everyone in her town is dead, she has bigger problems than paying the bills.

Seth is in the military, on his way to meeting his friend when he stumbles across Glory. Like Blue, he becomes ill, and he is immediately suspicious when he comes across Blue after finding multiple people dead of a mysterious illness. What is even more suspicious is that she has an extraordinary power - telekinesis. To make matters more complicated, Seth appears to be the next Superman. Oh yeah, and the government may be in on the whole thing. Blue and Seth must now work together to find out what is going on and save themselves from an unidentified evil.

I really liked the mystery of it all - why did it happen, how, and most importantly, whodunit? The characters were all very believable and unique, and I enjoyed getting to know them all. Blue was a bit annoying at times - she is a "non-violent person", so she got her panties in a twist a few times when Seth had to kill or injure some bad guys to save her. She kept having conflict with her feelings for him, because he was such a violent person. I kept saying, "Honey, he just saved your life. Get over it!" However, in the end, she came around, so I was satisfied.

Great story, ends on a cliffhanger, so I am looking forward to the next book! That one will most focus on two other characters - Kitty (Blue's friend) and Nick (Seth's military friend).
