I am revisiting Christi Caldwell's fabulous book again today for a special blog tour! Exciting things are below, including an interview with the heroine herself and a giveaway of a $25 Amazon gift card and digital copies of Caldwell's Sinful Brides series (her best series yet, in my opinion).
Adair Thorne has just watched his gaming-hell dream disappear into a blaze of fire and ash, and he’s certain that his competitors, the Killorans, are behind it. His fury and passion burn even hotter when he meets Cleopatra Killoran, a tart-mouthed vixen who mocks him at every turn. If she were anyone else but the enemy, she’d ignite a desire in him that would be impossible to control. No one can make Cleopatra do anything. That said, she’ll do whatever it takes to protect her siblings―even if that means being sponsored by their rivals for a season in order to land a noble husband. But she will not allow her head to be turned by the infuriating and darkly handsome Adair Thorne. There’s only one thing that threatens the rules of the game: Cleopatra’s secret. It could unravel the families’ tenuous truce and shatter the unpredictably sinful romance mounting between the hellion…and a scoundrel who could pass for the devil himself.
About The Author
USA Today bestselling author Christi Caldwell blames Julie Garwood and Judith McNaught for luring her into the world of historical romance. While sitting in her graduate school apartment at the University of Connecticut, Christi decided to set aside her class notes and try her hand at tales of love. She believes even the most perfect heroes and heroines have imperfections, and she rather enjoys torturing them before giving them a well-deserved happily ever after. Christi makes her home in southern Connecticut, where she spends her time writing, chasing after her feisty young son, and caring for her twin princesses-in-training. And now it's time to meet Cleopatra Killoran herself! See her answers to our questions below...
Cleopatra, your family runs a gaming hell, which is not exactly considered proper in polite society. How did you get involved in the venture and what is it you do there?
First, I’ve never been one who worried about polite society. I was born on the streets of London, and not only survived, but rose up. The former gang leader, god rot his soul, left the club to my eldest brother, Broderick. And Broderick? He was clever enough to know I’m as capable as any man in overseeing the gaming hell. From overseeing the staff to negotiating contracts, there is nothing I don’t do at the Devil’s Den.
You are known for carrying around an ornate dagger as well as other weapons. Who taught you to use them? What are you protecting yourself from?
Using a dagger was something…I had to do. When one’s survival depends on one’s wits and skill with a weapon, you either learn how to handle it and yourself in a fight. Or you fall. Having been a member of Mac Diggory’s gang, there was many moments to practice those skills…and plenty of moments in the streets to put them to use.
You recently had a change of scenery when you moved into Mayfair townhouse with Ryker Black and his wife--who just happen to be your biggest business rivals. What prompted your move?
Having risen up from nothing, and witness men who lose fortunes with the turn of a bad card hand, I know how quick a person’s fortunes can change. My brother Broderick knows it, too. We’re both determined to see the Devil’s Den flourish—because there are so many dependent upon us. The area where we differ? Broderick’s determined to see our family connected to the nobility—through marriage. And when he’s determined, nothing can sway him. If I didn’t go? **shrugs** He’d send one of my sisters, and I won’t see them sacrifice their lives or happiness.
Ryker’s brother Adair Thorne has been tasked with guarding/watching/protecting you. What is your relationship with him?
He’s the enemy. **pauses** Or he was. He is. Rather, he is by nature of our family’s longstanding rivalry. But the thing of it is? The more time I spend with him, I’ve come to appreciate who he is as a man. He’s fierce but tender and clever and… **scoots chair forward** And what he’s accomplished? It’s hard not to lo…appreciate such a man. Like me, he’s also climbed up from nothing, and whether he’s connected to the Black family or not, I can’t help but admire him. **blushes**
If you had to describe Adair in three words, what would they be?
Proud. Fearless. Obstinate.
Have you read the play Romeo and Juliet? What did you think of the Shakespeare work? Does the enemies-to-lovers trope ring true to you?
Didn’t have any time for reading on the streets but Broderick insisted me and my siblings were…educated. I know about Romeo and Juliet. I don’t see it as much of a romance, as they both die. **smirks** Adair Thorne and I? We’re too stubborn and smart to die.
You have made sacrifices your entire life for your family. But if you could have one wish come true, just for you, what would you want?
A family. I want a family of my own. A child who I could raise who doesn’t know the fear I knew. With a husband as loyal as I am, and not like the blighter my own mother made the mistake of trusting.
