Book Review: True Born by L.E. Sterling

Barnes and Noble

**I received a free copy via NetGalley for an honest review.**

This was an exceptionally well-written book! It's the kind of book that makes me wonder, Where has this author been all my life?

The world-building was amazing! I really was able to put myself in the world, visualize the destruction of Dominion, and understand the politics of what I would call an apocalyptic world. The idea of three sets of people - Lasters, Splicers, and True Horns - was thoroughly explained, and many characters of each set were introduced, so I got a solid idea of their makeup.

The Lasters are the downtrodden, desperate poor people, those who will eventually die of the Plague, who know this and are going crazy because of it. They listen to the Preacher man, a religious zealot who preys on their desperation to fuel his own mentally unstable plan to save everyone. The Splicers are the wealthy, those who can afford to have their bodies reconstructed as the Plague breaks their bodies down. They party like there is nothing going on outside their gilded cages, like bodies aren't piling up on the streets. They are essentially the epitome of privilege. The True Borns are the outcasts, partly because they're immune to the plague and partly because they are often a grudging necessity to the elite. They are unique, they have special components in their DNA that give them animal characteristics. Think shifters, but not everyone actually shifts.

Lucy is our girl who doesn't fit in any category. She and her twin, Margot, are living the high life until Margot is kidnapped, and reality slams down on their privileged heads. They suddenly have to learn how to survive, with the help of True Borns led by an antler-clad man named Nolan Storm. Lucy has an especially volatile relationship with one True Born, Jared Price, and I loved how the author portrayed their interactions. Very much a love-hate relationship, but you feel the need they both have for each other. While Lucy and Margot try to find out who, or rather what, they really are, they are constantly protected by Jared, Nolan, and several other True Borns.

This was a great read! It took me less than a day to get through it, which definitely tells me this is an author to watch. It ended solidly, so no huge cliffhanger. Just enough to leave you salivating for more.
